Gaz
A good article for the "BUT WHY DON'T THEY PROTEST PEACEFULLY?" brigade? Spoiler alert: they tried. They were ignored, ridiculed, and ostracised. https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2020/jun/05/roger-goodell-nfl-sorry-kneeling-protests-kaepernick
Boo Khaki
What happened to Colin Kaepernick is an absolute disgrace. Not just the ridiculous reaction to his perfectly peaceable and restrained protest, but the longer term prejudices he faced because of it. Trump bellowing about these people being booted out of their sports, and a transparently obvious blackballing of him by NFL owners afterwards. It's not the first time it's happened to an athlete in the NFL either. Kerry Rhodes was one of the top five or so players at his position in the league, but inexplicably sat on the free-agent pile for years completely unable to get a try-out, never mind a contract. His crime?... being seen with his arm around a man, leading to all sorts of gossip and innuendo that he might, shock, horror, be less that 100% heterosexual. In the UK we have football clubs willing to completely turn a blind eye to footballers who commit sex crimes, driving offences, get caught taking Class A's etc provided they offer something of worth on the pitch. In the US, you get bombed from the team and blackballed simply for being Black and 'uppity', or gay. No surprise I suppose when the vast majority of NFL ownership represents the old, white, conservative stereotype. Funnily enough, I don't recall conservative white america howling for blood when Adrian Peterson and Tyreek Hill were both revealed to be child-beating scumbags. Hill especially. He broke his infants arm and was recorded threatening to do in the child's mother, yet there he is, happily carrying on his NFL career as before without a care in the world. Bet if he takes a knee he'll be gone in an instant. From Wiki - Quote Domestic assault conviction[edit] Stillwater police records indicate that on December 12, 2014, Hill was arrested on complaints of assault of his 20-year-old pregnant girlfriend, Crystal Espinal. The police report states that the two got into an argument and he threw her around "like a ragdoll", punched her in the face, sat on her and repeatedly punched her in the stomach, and choked her.[81] Oklahoma State dismissed him from the football team after the charges.[82] Hill eventually pleaded guilty to domestic assault and battery by strangulation and was sentenced to three years of probation, an anger-management course, a year-long batterer's program, and was required to undergo a domestic-abuse evaluation, a sentence that Espinal was consulted about and comfortable with.[24][83] Espinal eventually gave birth to a boy.[21][84] Child abuse investigation[edit] In March 2019, Hill was investigated for alleged battery after an incident in which his three-year-old son sustained a broken arm.[85] The following month, his son was placed into care temporarily as a result of an emergency hearing conducted by the Kansas Department of Children and Families.[86] On April 24, the Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe released a statement, saying that his office believed a crime had been committed but the evidence did not allow them to conclude the perpetrator, and that the Kansas Department of Children and Families continued to investigate.[86] The following day, an audio recording of Hill and Espinal discussing the injury to their son and the subsequent investigation was released.[86] In the recording that surfaced, Hill and his fiancée discuss their son's broken arm, she said that their son is scared of him, to which Hill responds, "You should be afraid of me too."[87] As a result, the criminal investigation into Hill was re-opened.[88] On June 7, prosecutors announced the case against Hill was inactive.[89] On June 10, reports surfaced that medical investigations showed his son's arm was broken by accident and in a way that indicated it was broken bracing for a fall.[90] On July 9, 2019, the full unedited audio from the recording was released. In the full audio, Hill accuses Espinal of lying about the domestic violence accusations in 2014 and about Hill breaking their son's arm.[91] The NFL stated they have always had the full audio of the recording.[92] On July 19, 2019, the NFL released a statement saying that Hill will not be suspended and that they found no evidence that Hill violated the personal conduct policy, but the incident will be re-examined if new evidence emerges.[93] So this is the sort of thing the NFL regards as perfectly ok, but if you kneel down and refuse to stand for an anthem that venerates a state that persecutes and murders black people, no, f**k you, you're a goner. Del79
A few idiots will always turn up when you get a large gathering. So it was sad to see the frustration here. To be fair to both the protesters and the police, they were in constant discussion and it seemed that the majority of it went as planned

It started off legitimate but now it’s like a freak show. Thousands protesting in London during the middle of “lockdown” = fine, top lads. Families and Neds going to the beaches last week = covidiots who’ll kill your gran
vikingTON
That's another reason why in any self-respecting violent protest/riot you go for the horses in the first place: they can switch sides under threat and prove more of a danger to the authorities than the crowd. Kinda like war elephants that plowed straight into their own army. Edited June 6, 2020 by vikingTON
