Massive Eddie Howe rumours tonight, apparently a "sighting" in Glasgow

Even if its pish whatever drowns out the noise of Roy Keane

Obviously they’re just rumours, but the jumping about between completely different types of managers (Keane, Howe, Maresca, Wilder, Lampard) tells me that Desmond doesn’t really know what type of manager he wants.

If it’s Howe then your Sporting Director will have almost no power. Howe is a notorious control freak.

If they've got the money to attract him, then Howe is absolutely the best candidate by a country mile. Obviously Celtic are going to appoint Keane of course.

I don’t know about that, but how good the guy is is kinda beside the point.

All we’ve heard from Celtic all year is that they’re going to modernise the football department. Modern football departments don’t have an all-powerful manager who takes control of everything. They have a Sporting Director/DOF, who is responsible for the football operations. All the different departments (Medical, Recruitment, First Team, Reserve Team, Academy) report to this guy. The manager is just a cog in the machine.

The advantage of this is supposed to be that it lightens the load on your manager, and it means when he leaves in 18 months you don’t have to rip everything up. You can keep your style of football consistent regardless of who’s in charge.

But Celtic have interviewed inexperienced managers who need that structure for support (Maresca, Lampard), managers who will downright refuse to work with a DOF (Wilder, Howe) and a guy who’s been out the game so long he probably doesn’t know what he wants (Keane).

It tells me that Desmond doesn’t really understand the role, and certainly doesn’t understand what he’s looking for. Which is probably why serious candidates for the DOF job have turned it down and he’s been left with Man City’s loan manager.

How do you know they've interviewed anyone?

In the know knowledge or something?

Hearing it’s Howes job if he wants it and should be offered the job officially this week.

Desmond prefers Keane however the rest of the board and apparently Dom McKay see Howe the better fit. The only reason I’m a little more hopeful this has some substance is that the usual itk Celtic naysayers aren’t dismissing this even going so far to suggest Howe has been in contact with JK to discuss the current squad.

Not getting the hopes up yet however he’s now 3/10 with some bookies

If Howe ever wants to get a proper big job in England he will need to learn to work with a Sporting Director.

Dominic McKay's input shouldn't be valued that highly here, it should be the Sporting Director making that recommendation. With all due respect to McKay, he knows absolutely f**k all about football, same as Peter Lawwell before him and Stewart Robertson as Rangers. These guys are bean counters and marketing execs.

Howe would make sense on the basis that the Sporting Director rumours have gone completely quiet. Maybe Celtic simply won't appoint one and hope the support get swept up in Howe-mania?

If it is Howe, it's going to be very interesting. Comes in with a clearly defined, exciting style of play and has a massive point to prove to English football to show he's not a loser. Getting him in in early April is the smart thing to do with such an enormous rebuild due so soon.

Not going to make assumptions about what Dom McKay knows or indeed doesn’t know about football however as the incoming CEO I imagine he should be involved in the decision making.

We currently don’t have a sporting director to make the decision and delaying a decision until one is appointed if there is to be one will be to our detriment

To be fair he's had two roles and both were at small clubs (relevant to the time taking the job). As mentioned elsewhere if he wants another job in the English top league then he'll need to learn to work with someone above him.

The SPFL is probably ideal for him.

There are still plenty of EPL clubs that don’t operate with a sporting director, so not necessarily.

unsure where this belief Howe won't work with a director of football or technical director as he had Richard Hughes pretty much doing that role for him at Bournemouth and he oversaw much of their recruitment

Hughes worked under Howe, not above him.

Initially until he became Technical Director when they went up to the prem, so essentially he became responsible for all scouting and recruitment with Howe and the CEO having the final say. The very definition of the title director suggests he reported to the CEO and not Howe however i dont see the hierarchy being an issue if the manager is allowed to the final nod

I see there being no difference in that role Hughes fulfills to the one Celtic will be looking to fill

However lets see as its all still speculation as this point
