Russian invasion of Ukraine

"Expect a growing investor backlash against anything Russia-related, which explains why gold miner Polymetal has taken another beating, falling another 46%. Year to date the shares have now fallen by two thirds in value, putting the share price at levels not seen since 2015. Even worse was Sberbank whose London listed shares collapsed by 75%.

Many investors are showing solidarity with the Ukraine and no longer believe it is morally right to have anything do with Russia in their portfolio.

BAE Systems soared by 14% as investors flocked to the defence sector most likely in the belief that governments around the world would take another look at their defence budgets and increase spending. Fellow defence companies were also in demand, Chemring jumped 10% and Qinetiq was up nearly 9%, while French electrical systems group Thales advanced 13% given its position as a supplier to the defence sector."

The EU is expecting Ukraine’s application to join the European Union “imminently” and officials in Brussels said “this will need to be assessed very rapidly by the council and the decision made as to whether to request an urgent opinion from the European commission”.

I find the rush to state that 'we refuse to play Russia' from countries who haven't even got any planned fixtures against them really weird.

I think it's because Russia have a chance to be playing the FIFA world cup this year.

They could qualify for both men's and women's World Cups. If huge numbers of teams say they won't play them it eventually means that keeping Russia in these tournaments becomes increasingly farcical and hopefully will lead to them being banned.

Berdyansk has been occupied by the Russians.  Local residents (Russian speakers with many ethnic Russians) celebrate their liberation by gathering in front of the Town Hall and chanting "Putin is a dickhead".

Human rights charity Amnesty International said “a 220mm Uragan rocket dropped cluster munitions on the Sonechko nursery and kindergarten in the town of Okhtyrka in Sumy Oblast” on Friday. It added: “The strike may constitute a war crime.”

Amnesty said three people were killed in the attack, including a child, while another child was wounded, PA Media reported.

Cluster munitions scatter or release smaller munitions or bomblets over a wide area, increasing the potential for casualties and damage. More than 100 countries have committed never to use the weapons under the Convention on Cluster Munitions, including the UK, but neither Russia nor Ukraine have signed the agreement.

It's going to be difficult for FIFA to say that war in Europe is verboten but it's ok in Gaza,Yemen and Syria given that the majority of voting rights are held by non white nations.
