There was perhaps a naive hope amongst some that a full scale invasion would result in some kind of military assistance from the west, even if it was just air cover enforcing a no fly zone, that's clearly not going to happen. A bit of it was for show aswell. Ukraine knows as well as anyone that they can't win an outright war against Russia. They either surrender, or fight back and lose, and the latter would be very bloody. It will be interesting to see if there's much appetite for an insurgent, guerrilla style fightback amongst Ukrainians. They could win if they turned it into a long war with roadside IED's and ambushes of Russian patrols etc. Worked for the Taliban, although it did take 20 years. I would doubt it, Putin has a lot of supporters in Ukraine and can't see the appetite for the level of destruction that kind of campaign would cause. The Russian flag will be flying in Kiev by Sunday, and that will hopefully be the end of the killing. Meanwhile almost straight after Russia rolls nuclear weapons into Belarus after the 'overwhelming' vote for them to be there.

They’re already in NATO, attacking Ukraine or Georgia is one thing, attacking a member of NATO is an entirely different shit storm. An attack on any NATO member is an attack on all NATO members he’s not that mental to take on 30 countries.

A bit of a (huge) reach but say an independent Scotland decided to align themselves with Russia? You think our southern neighbours would just huff, shrug their shoulders and say ‘you can’t park that there mate’. Ukraine’s position and NATO’s (USA’s) pushing on Russia’s border is the entire reason this has all come to pass.
Theroadlesstravelled
It looks like pictures are on the news. Burnt out vehicles, rubble from fallen buildings, roaming gangs with guns. My mistake, that’s not Ukraine that’s Paisley last week.

Pretty much, Russia was in a mess at that point too after the fall of the USSR. They had bigger problems than the Baltic states joining NATO at that time.
