Honest Saints Fan
The local SNP councillor in the Dingwall ward really does his best for the local area and often sorts out issues immediately so will be reluctantly voting for him. Only based on his personal record and not an endorsement of the SNP.

I don't base my local vote on national party politics but the SNP guy seems decent on Ward stuff and lives a few doors down the road so it's easy to have a word with him. In general I think independents are better as their focus is solely on Inverness and the Highlands, rather than either backing or opposing Holyrood.
Michael W
£18k seems perfectly generous where the job is part-time and there is no expectation that the job comes with full-time hours. Other than council meetings or if you are on a committe, it's basically up to the individual how much time is committed. I guess the downside is that such commitment might be the difference in elections, with a more pro-active candidate possibly preferred. The main problem is that the nature of it as it favours the retired. It's a time commitment, that's for certain, and it may well clash with employment or those with younger families etc. might find they simply don't have the time or would prefer to spend it with their family. Retired people naturally have a lot more free time so can allocate as much time to it as they like. Someone that was in the year below me at school is standing in this one (not retired, clearly!). Ginaro
I'd heard of the Scottish Family Party: Pro-Family, Pro-Marriage, Pro-Life in the Scottish elections, but didn't realise they were standing so many candidates in the local elections - 11/17 in Edinburgh and 14/22 in Fife on the notice of poll. One guy I know of does music stuff with the local church but I didn't realise he was that much of a bigoted fundamentalist...

It's the ward most of the well-off old folk live in. A certain Derek Stillie is a Tory candidate in Prestwick. That's the first Independence 4 Scotland Party candidate I've seen - in Dunbar & East Linton for East Lothian Council. Also I see the Greens will have at least one in the Highland Council next term - only three candidates put their name forwards for a three seat ward. A Tory and a LibDem were also elected de facto. RedEd
I should also have said that the Rubbish Party is standing again in East Ayrshire.
Ray Patterson
Voting Lib Dem number 1 on my ballot - local councillor is very hard working and does a great job. Feel like voting Greens as 2nd purely so we can have more than the same four parties in the Council Chambers. Usually vote SNP but cba as I've never met either of my local councillors and they've made a c**t of the Olympia tbh.
Clown Job
I know you can’t force anyone to stand but f**k me “automatically elected” is depressing thing to see

That’s more depressing. More depressing yet is that people who won’t vote will still complain about services and “the fucking useless Councillors”.
Highland Capital
These uncontested seats are pretty poor. You could have any old idiot decide he wants to be a councillor and they could get in by default. You'd think there'd be some procedure in place to combat this.

Could end up having the non-entities of the Far Right stand which is quite scary tbh.

Was just thinking that. You could end up with someone from the National Front or the whacko Scottish Family Party as your councillor because no-one else could be bothered standing. Surely there should be something to stop this. The only idea I can think of is, on election day, have a referendum on accepting those three candidates or to have a by-election at a later date.

Allow another week for any new candidates to register? Same for the ones with fewer candidates than seats as there needs to be a by-election anyway, now that people have been alerted to the fact there's a free seat might as well try and get it filled in a May election.
Highland Capital
The lists for the Highlands are up and here's some stuff I've noticed - the aforementioned German porn star is running for the Family Party in Sutherland. They also have a Freedom Alliance candidate in that ward. The former MSP Chris Ballance is running for the Greens in Loch Ness again. The Libertarians are standing in East Sutherland and Inverness Ness-Side. The Independence for Scotland Party are standing in Inverness West. Inverness Central have a TUSC candidate. The former MSP for the Highlands for the Tories Mary Scanlon is standing in Culloden and Ardersier.
