Champions League 2022/23

Milan have enough defensive organisation to give them a fighting chance in a one-off final. Their shackling of Napoli in all three recent matches was outstanding in terms of tactical awareness and individual performances (Tonali and Calabria in particular).

Inter aren't as capable of winning the tournament IMO as they're just a level below the most effective sides in every area of the park.

Thought loaned players couldn't play against their parent club.

Or has it changed?

It's been the case since at least 2004, as Fernando Morientes played (and scored) for Monaco v Real Madrid in that year's Champions League. I think the terminology used was that for loans between different countries they were classed as "temporary transfers" rather than "loans" for some administrative reason.

Don’t really agree with this at all. Napoli had looked half decent prior to this round of fixtures but neither of the Milan clubs have looked anything special IMO. As soon as they play a non-farmer team like City or Madrid they’ll get pumped out. Inter & AC Milan were slapped about in the group stages by Bayern & Chelsea respectively and then got relatively easy draws through to the semis. Serie A probably improved a bit but still nowhere near ‘back to its best’ sadly.

Yeah Italian teams have knocked out Frankfurt, Spurs, Porto and Benfica. Luck of the draw

I'm surprised the Milan teams even beat those teams given how they're doing in the league https://thefishy.co.uk/formtable.php?table=33

Their recent league form has been awful. Inter lost to Monza in the San Siro last Saturday and Milan managed a draw at Bologna. Admittedly they were looking ahead to the midweek games but they both need to start winning again in the league or it's arrivederci to next season's CL

Maybe, although I wouldn’t necessarily put too much heed into group games when they both still qualified and are now further in the competition than the teams who beat them.

It’s a very promising season, let’s hope they can replicate it again next season.

Seansational goals from Barella and Correa in that tie.

Yes but as I stated, they’re only further in the tournament than Bayern & Chelsea because they were fortunate enough to play teams from the Portuguese league and a distinctly average Spurs  - in a normal year group runners up would not typically have as easy a path to the semis. The Milan teams are nothing special at all, and have greatly benefitted from many of the usual suspects being drawn against each other earlier on in the tournament - Real Madrid have already knocked out Chelsea (who beat Dortmund) & Liverpool, Bayern knocked out PSG & City have beaten Bayern.

Both Milan teams are decent but it’s been the above special circumstances this year that have allowed them to progress to the semis. It doesn’t signal some kind of renaissance of Serie A as Europe’s top league as it was previously.

also very recently too, Coutinho scoring in the 8-2 for Bayern against Barcelona (probably one of the funniest examples going too)

I can't remember it very well, but there was one a few years ago which was something to the effect that if Courtouis ended up playing against Chelsea when he was on loan at Atletico Madrid, there was some clause that he could play but there was a fee involved as part of the agreement. Can't mind if he played in the end.

Milan didn't get to the semi final by beating Spurs though. Napoli are a significantly stronger team than the comparative and absolute nick outfits that are  Bayern Munich and Chelsea are at the moment.

The distinctly average Spurs side who are far ahead of Chelsea in the league? There surely isn’t any team around who would rather face Napoli than Chelsea. Knockout games are far more relevant than group games.

It’s not the top league but it’s quite the revival this year with half the CL and Europa league semi finalists (4 total, Spain have 2, England and Germany only 1). Add in the conference league and it is one more for Italy and England.

Lets hope they can keep it up, but even if they win no trophies it’s been an excellent European campaign for Italian clubs, demonstrating their top teams are amongst the best, and their strong depth.

Recently people were saying Serie A was falling well behind, they are looking a bit silly now. Still a long way from matching La Liga dominance of course.

I don’t think anyone who said that is looking a bit silly - look at the coefficient compared to England and Spain. You could name about a dozen players who’ve been jettisoned from the Barclays for being too old/not good enough who are now starting for top teams in Italy.
