On rolls, like many things in life, they can be improved by strapping them in to a metal cage and exposing them to extreme heat:

Roll, cut in half, under grill (outsides up) until crispy, remove, turn over, butter, back under grill (butter side up) until butter is melted, remove, eat.
That’s what you’re after.
