What Was The Last Movie You Watched?

Well acted but pretty slow moving and quite frustrating to watch as some of the characters were so fucking stupid.

Aye, that second point is the thing that made me hate it so much. And it's made even more frustrating by the fact that the movie plays it pretty much as it happened. It made me hate it to the point of having to turn it off.

EDIT: Probably worth noting that a lot of people will most likely get something from this, given how close to the incident it was, so it's not like the movie is unbelievable. This shit happened, which makes it perversely interesting in it's own way. Just not for me.

Welcome To The Punch 7/10

Above average British gangster movie with some quality actors, nice set pieces and good dialogue. Peter Mullan is one of the stand outs for me. Only let downs were Andrea Riseboroughs "You Slag" Landaan accent and

David Morriseys amazing broken/unbroken arm

. Worth a watch.

Young Adult

This is a totally charmless and somewhat horrible film, yet I don't say that as a criticism.

Charlize Theron - who is excellent in this - is a late-30s woman that goes back to her hometown to get back who she believes to be her 'soul mate'. He's a happily married father by the way. It's certainly funny in places but at other times it's excruciating to watch (proper watching it through fingers stuff) because Theron plays a really tragic but unlikeable character. I liked Patton Oswalt's character but the other characters weren't particularly interesting, despite being crucial to the plot.

The best thing about this film was Theron's performance and her character - as a character study it is a very good piece.

I loved Juno and there's many parallels between the two films but it just falls short of the high standards set by Juno.

Argo - As a rule of thumb, I take these American 'based on a true story' films (as well as the CIA's version of any event) with a massive pinch of salt. As an action/thriller it does a good job though. I'm impressed with Affleck's directorial career so far.

Was a good touch to show the anti-Iranian handwringing in the states at the time. Would've been pretty tasteless to depict the Iranian people as basically dribbling zombies, without showing that this exists on the other side too.

You can't really go too wrong with Cranston, Goodman, Arkin et al. 8/10.

The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou

Meh. I think Wes Anderson is too quirky for my liking - I've given his films a chance but I just find his stuff to be really average.

This film does have its moments. Bill Murray is in top form. That's about it, it really doesn't do much for me. It wasn't terrible but I didn't really find it particularly engaging or worthwhile, which is somewhat disappointing.

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington ( 1939 )

Jimmy Stewart is a man with charm to burn, and utterly captivating on screen. Which helps greatly as he plays an everyman sent to Washington to be a puppet for a political machine headed by a man named Taylor. Senator Smith catches on to what's going on and decides to fight against it when he tries to pass a bill through, and it gets stopped by the people who brought him in. And Smith is the sort of guy you want to get behind, and you can really feel that what he's going through is a travesty. His big final push is fantastic, with so many wonderful moments, and some cracking comic moments as well, but in the right way that it doesn't take away from the dramatic power of what's going on.

It's a movie which is every bit the classic as it has been made out to be. Wonderful, wonderful movie.

Gangster squad...............excellent movie. Plenty of action.

Another really good and clever movie is End of Watch, fantastic movie which is very gritty hard hitting movie that for me was one of the best of 2012.

Parental Guidance - Billy Crystal and Bette Midler proving to their helicopter-parent daughter that sometimes grandparents know best.

A few good gags, and Crystal and Midler carried an average-to-good comedy without breaking sweat. Would make a good "family" watch as it's not actively juvenile and doesn't throw in sexual references or language in order to appeal to the teen crowd.

6/10 - Passed an hour and a half on a Sunday afternoon.

The Loved Ones - 7/10

Australian film about a high school girl who gets a knockback for prom, so has her dad kidnap the guy who knocked her back, and torture him. This film is f**king mental, and highly enjoyable. Some of the scenes are properly brutal, and as we are gradually shown more of the girl's background, we realise just how fucked up she and "daddy" are.

The actress playing Lola is terrific. Hadn't seen her in anything else before.

Can't agree with you on this one. It was disgusting torture porn. I think the young lad gave a very touching performance and he could have a great future but it was Wolf Creek all over again.

Black Water is the only Australian horror movie I've watched which I've really liked. Wolf Creek had a charismatic villain, but everything from when he gets nasty onwards just turns into the usual shit.

The Loved Ones is genuinely shit. Gets points for being disturbing at points, and the atmosphere it tries to create is certainly there, but everything else about it is just horrendous.

The Ruins is easily the worst horror movie I've seen, and that's co-produced in Australia. There's a pattern there.

EDIT: Just seen that Daybreakers is Australian as well. Another shitfest.

The Aussies don't really seem to get horror. Even Black water was average at best, and I still harbour resentment over the £3.50 I paid for Wolf Creek on eBay. It's not as if they can't excel in other genres - witness Muriel's Wedding, The Dish, Priscilla, Strictly Ballroom etc.

Bit of a campfest there, mind, looking over the titles.....

American Psycho - 8/10.

First time watching this and Christian Bale is on utterly mesmerising form, goes from intense to dickhead to hilarious to psychotic with ease and actually moulds all 4 of those traits together into 1 at times. If he wasnt Batman he could've made a fine joker. Good flick.

Max and Mary. On the surface, it's an Australian stop-motion animation black comedy about a pair of very unlikely pen-pals. Max, a 40 something failure from New York and Mary, an eight year old friendless Australian girl. There are some hilarious moments and the script is brilliantly written. Underneath it's a beautifully observed study of anxiety, depression and loneliness. Philip Seymour Hoffman is brilliant as the voice of Max. I'm not ashamed to admit, I shed a few tears at the end and it's been a long, long time since a film has moved me that much.

I'd never heard of this until I watched it. I cannot recommend it enough.

To The Wonder

Dear, oh dear.

Like some of Malick's best work, the narrative is crazy- it's challenging to follow because everything you see and hear is part of it, which is a great way to tell a story, but unlike The Tree Of Life and The Thin Red Line, and rather like but moreso than The New World, the story is mind-blowingly boring. Sometimes when you don't get a film or miss a part I think you should just go with it and try and let it work for you, but even though I love the cinematography and inventive narrative style I can't make any sense of why Malick made this film. It's a love story of an indecisive French woman and a handsome American, exploring all the good stuff and the bad stuff, but it's done in such a tedious and unenjoyable way. I don't know if it was just another experiment by the guy and it fell flat on its face, but it's one of the worst films I've seen in a fair while.

One of the biggest disappointments ever from a director that should know better, but I still love that camerawork, all the way through there's some great stuff.

I think he'd make a good Bond villan to be honest, really good performance by him, don't know if it was oscar nominated(probably not) but it is one of the standout performances in recent years IMO.

Lawless;

pretty enjoyable film ,not sure if it was as good as some critics made out but good story, I'm a big fan of Boardwalk Empire so love all that prohibition stuff, pretty different take on it though , Hardy and Lebouf are very good in it and Gary Oldman is superb the short time he is given, can't help thinking a full film with Oldmans character would be very good, Guy Pearce is the showstealer for me with his phsycotic law enforcement agent , excellent actor . Enjoyable film but lacked a certain something ,7.5/10
