Just back from seeing this and have avoided the thread until now.

Thought the film was very good and had plenty of laughs in it. However compared to the original it's nowhere near up to the same standard. I was quite disappointed with how much they chopped in from the first one and it was as if they were a bit afraid that this couldn't stand up on its own and needed that constant cuddle from 20 odd years ago.

Still enjoyed it and it was waaaaaaay better than Scum which I thought was a major let down.

To be fair, given that the last time the central character even set eyes on the rest of the gang was at the end of this first film,  would you expect anything other than several hark backs to the first?

Had Renton carried on his life elsewhere in Edinburgh or even remotely in the vicinity of the others,  I'd fully agree but given that the moment when we pick back up is the moment that he picks back up,  then he's clearly going to attach a huge amount of nostalgia to proceedings.

In fact, the misplaced romanticism of Renton's nostalgia is one of the central themes of the film and touched upon several times.

I thought the "you're a tourist in your own youth" line was one of the most memorable.

Odeon Dundee - don't buy a ticket you can apparently just walk in if last night is anything to go by.

When I came out of the 2nd last showing at Kilmarnock Odeon on Friday (and did the mandatory wait for the wife to go to the toilet) I noticed a couple of junkies hanging around.  At first I thought they must've been in watching the film as they weren't full blown obvious smack heads but they looked pretty rough.  They were stealing the wee mini tubs of Haagen Daas out of the freezer and then taking all the sugar out of the wee trays in the Costa that is part of that cinema.

To be fair the Odeon profit margin on sweets/ice cream etc is so big that I don't mind someone robbing them for a change.

How long will it take for a clip from the 1690 scene to be up on YouTube or somewhere similar?

That could well be the greatest scene in the history of the Scottish film industry.

Not the best quality, but at least the No More Catholics scene is up.

Yup. When I went in last week I seen 2 people working. One behind the food stall who was on her phone oblivious to anything and another one up the stairs emptying bins.

Saw it Saturday. I cannot imagine a more perfect explanation of how many of us feel about our lost youth and wasted lives.

Renton's wee dance to Iggy Pop at the end nearly had me in tears. I still listen to the music I did 20 years ago, because it takes me back to my teenage bedroom. Seeing him do exactly that was brilliant.

9.5/10.

Christ would you say you've wasted the last 20 years? That's not so good mate.

It's OK to look back a bit and indulge in nostalgia to a point. But at some stage you need to get in the moment and get shit sorted (but you certainly don't need to listen to today's music).

Haha, not really, perhaps that was clumsy: I probably meant the lost youth more than the wasted life aspect. I'm very happy with where I've got to, but it would have been nice to have reached this point a wee bit sooner. I know this much: I'm a lot closer to death now than I was 20 years ago  It's a very good mid-life crisis film, and maybe the take-home message is the latter half of your post there.

I remember watching American Beauty in early 2000, when I was 21, and I said at the time how glad I was that I wasn't watching it aged 40, as it would have really knocked me for six. Well, now, here we are (albeit I'm 'only' 38...) and T2 might have had that effect slightly.

Opens here in Germany next Thursday.

Got a ticket to see it on Thursday in english. Then off to see it, in german, with some german friends on Saturday.

Interested to see how some stuff (1690 for example) gets translated / portrayed.

There's plenty of exposition on the 1690 stuff - should translate just fine. The themes of the film are pretty universal so doesn't really need any specialist Scottish knowledge. Welshbairn correctly points out there is a bit of a music video feel to parts but Danny Boyle is unashamed of that and also goes out of his way to make Edinburgh (and the Forth Bridges) look good. Yes there are rough bits but he has also done his bit for the tourist industry to make Edinburgh look like an attractive European city break destination.

Cinemas make virtually no profit on sweets or ice cream. If they could avoid selling them they would. Suppliers give huge bulk discounts to supermarkets due to volume of sales but cinemas never sell enough to get a discount. It's bag in box juice n popcorn where the margins are and even then due to operating costs these margins barely sustain the rest of the business. Bizarrely some of the busiest sites are the least profitable due to property costs. Sorry to be all geeky bout it but had 16 years of cinema mgement.

The soundtrack is wonderful for this as well.

Also Ewen Bremner's performance as Spud is an absolute joy to behold.

Just downloaded the soundtrack. That Prodigy remix of Lust for Life is a bit special.

Bremner was indeed incredible; star of the piece, no question. How he does that thing with his legs (the boxing scene  ) is a mystery.

Also: Spud on Daylight Savings :lol:
