Trainspotting II / Porno

I'm rereading Porno just now and very little from the book us included in the movie. The basics are the same, Renton coming back, Spud writing a book, a scam involving the sex industry and the much loved 1690 plan but really apart from having the same basic storyline, the two are completely different. They've got a cheek rebranding the Porno book with a T2 cover but it'll be a decent cash in for them for anyone who hasn't already read it.

I'm going to give it another read.  I got it when it came out, but really didn't like it at all.

It's not as good as Trainspotting (obviously) or even Skagboys which I also reread recently but it has its merits. It just misses the grittiness of those two, a bit far fetched and feels like a bit of a caper. It does have Juice Terry so gets plus points for that.

Skagboys was good, it felt more in keeping with Trainspotting and you could see how the characters got to where they were in the original book.

Juice Terry improves anything by 117%. That's science.  A Decent Ride had me in stitches, even more so because I was reading it on holiday at the same time as my wife's very posh English uncle and having to translate half the stuff for him was fantastic.

I read Porno before Glue which didn’t help, definitely not one of my favourite Irvine Welsh books- whereas Glue is probably my favourite overall. There’s obviously loads of other characters from the Trainspotting / Glue / Skagboys books who aren’t in the film like Juice Terry, Carl Ewart, and Second Prize.

I think one of the improvements of the film is replacing Nikki with the Bulgarian lassie, who (apart from being a total ride) at least has a reason for being the way she is.

I read A Decent Ride shortly before we played Ross County in Dingwall at the end of the 14/15 season and couldn't get the "Gee the baw tae Ryan Stevenson" bit out my head during the game.

Bit weird that Spud looked the youngest out of them despite being a junkie for presumably most of his life. In reality he would have looked 95 and most likely dead. The scene where they come back from the field trip and took smack reminded me why the first film disappointed me compared to the book, glamorising heroin. The books did the opposite. Going to have to read Porno again, didn't recognise much of it in the film. Danny Boyle's films always seem to be like extended music videos rather than telling a story. I enjoy them but come out feeling a bit empty. He got a lot of it right though.

Aye, what with dead babies, a guy dying from HIV from sharing a needle, a guy having to fish in a toilet bowl for drugs he's accidentally shat out, a guy having delirious hallucinations due to withdrawal, a guy nearly dying from an overdose, a guy hugely shitting the bed, Spud in general, the grief and frustration (and anger and pain) the families of the users are shown to experience, folk having to steal to fund their habit, folk getting arresting for said theft, folk serving a prison sentence for said theft, it really makes heroin seem fucking brilliant.

Aye but the bed shitting was a result of the withdrawal, i.e. happened because he was on it.

Even still, the rest applies.

Fair enough, but only the man who created the Olympics celebration of the NHS could make swimming in a toilet bowl full of shit look like a Busby Berkeley musical interlude. The books were a lot harsher.

Just back from seeing this and have avoided the thread until now.

Thought the film was very good and had plenty of laughs in it. However compared to the original it's nowhere near up to the same standard. I was quite disappointed with how much they chopped in from the first one and it was as if they were a bit afraid that this couldn't stand up on its own and needed that constant cuddle from 20 odd years ago.

Still enjoyed it and it was waaaaaaay better than Scum which I thought was a major let down.

Opens here in Germany next Thursday.

Got a ticket to see it on Thursday in english. Then off to see it, in german, with some german friends on Saturday.

Interested to see how some stuff (1690 for example) gets translated / portrayed.
