Contracts often are negotiated by agents to allow both parties to walk away if it suits - often a 12-18 month “settlement”.

He's was on a reported £800k a year when he left for Stoke in 2019.

Meaning you'd imagine he'll be on at least the same again. Given he signed a 5 and a half year deal in 2022, it would need to be some settlement for O'Neill to feel £3m is worth walking away from and Aberdeen would need to be 100% certain they want him as their man.

I can't see it. The money changing hands here is too big. If O'Neill was walking into the last year of a deal, Id get it but there's no way is anyone settling in advance on a contract like that.

The only saving grace really would be O'Neil being under contract for another four years with NI (could Aberdeen afford to buy out a 4 year deal for an international manager?) and the presence of Neil Lennon, who is higher profile in general management terms and has a higher level of success to his name than Robinson - you'd think he would most likely chuck his hat in the ring too.

Aye it could be millions to get O'Neill? A google search says he was on £750k a year with NI then around double that at Stoke.

I cant see Lennon ever managing the national side after how his playing career went/ended with them.

I have to agree. I personally don’t see O’Neill leaving that role for Aberdeen.

Outside the OF it’s a fcuking hard slog to gain any credibility or be in with a chance to win any major honours.

If you're in his shoes, you're daft leaving the contract and role for anywhere given how Stoke turned out for him.

4 years as a gaffer on that wage with let's be honest, a 95% chance of a home Euros qualification at the end of it is something that I don't think any club outside of the big two in Scotland could entice someone away with.

Similarly if he did go and Robinson was offered it, he'd be insane not to take it for these reasons.

Just feel that we are on the verge of achieving something special in the league this season. I really hope we can push on and keep 4th. That would be fcuking incredible for our club.,

The more successful we become the more likely it is that another club with greater resources can pick up our manager and best players.

Only a few years ago we were really struggling and the turnaround was dramatic under Jack Ross who cashed in while his stock was high.

I think there's more to it for us , if O'Neil get the Aberdeen job . Diarmuid is his assistant with NI , and he might be looking for him to join him up there too , which could see the initial break-up of our management set-up !

I think Diarmuid's next move will be to become manager in his own right.

International jobs seem to be reasonably good jobs as well. You can pretty much live where you want, they pay better than teams like St Mirren, you are almost part time, and if you are probably in for 18 months to 2 years even if it's a disaster, so decent job security for a manager these days. Only big downside I suppose is that you are judged on so few games, with limited time to actually work with the team.

Surely it's Alex Neil for Aberdeen anyway? Seems such a glaringly obvious appointment where the timing has never been better. Maybe that's just too sensible for them and they really will spend £2m on O'Neill so they can spend the same sacking him this time next year.

I reckon Diamond Dave will sack the new bloke two years from the date of appointment. Got 50p set aside to stick on with Bet365 the moment the scarf aloft photo gets published, and the press conference with the phrases ‘big club, ‘huge potential’,  and ‘what’s my mutually agreed payoff plan Dave’ takes place. Two years. Tops.

Happy Jon Obika Day everybody!

Not one player left in our squad since that glorious night.

Possibly only two players out of that squad would make it into Robbo’s squad imho - Hladky & Durmus.

That night was pivotal in our clubs history.

We should celebrate this day every year!

From Cairters Corner

“By this point in the month, the dark shadow of the coronavirus had moved onto mainland Britain, and talk of a postponement dominated the lead up to the match, however the SPFL decided to play the fixture and this would be the last before the indefinite lockdown was called by the authorities, or as I called it on Twitter, the final match of the old world.

It was of course a big match anyway, but Saints knew defeat would put them bottom of the league and with the season potentially finishing early this would be more than problematic as it could result in our relegation. Thankfully, the football gods were kind to us and as we all know a club like Hearts are unlikely to bother us on such a big occasion as they are and always will be the biggest bottle merchants in the history of sport.

Saints of course went into the match without captain Stephen McGinn, vice-captain Kyle Magennis and Ryan Flynn, three central midfielders with the latter two almost certain to be playing had they been fit. By the end of the night, we had also lost Conor McCarthy, Ilkay Durmus and Cammy MacPherson to injury leaving our central midfield as Jamie McGrath and Tony Andreu, as Sam Foley had to drop to centre back to replace McCarthy where of course we have serious cover issues after Paul McGinn and Kirk Broadfoot left the club close to transfer deadline day.

The fighting spirit of the side was outstanding despite the significant losses to our team, and although there was a nervy end to the match, Hearts never looked like scoring. In fact, had Saints not have so many injuries to contend with on the evening, we would have won far more comfortably than we did, however the 1-0 win was most welcome due to the twelfth goal of the season from Jon Obika, who is proving all of his critics very wrong.

On the evening, Hearts couldn’t handle the big striker, and he bullied the two Hearts central defenders before slotting home after a fabulous through ball from Ross Wallace. It was a well-deserved goal, but as well as Obika played it was Sam Foley who was the outstanding player on the field of play as he gave a masterclass in ball winning all over the park.“

Quite the turnover in players from 4 years ago. Actually liked Famewo as a player.

Playing for Sheffield Wednesday now. Junior Morias is with Notts County

Oh, no... there won't be space for a commercialised version of pagan ritual, or celebrating the incorrect date of the dubious birth of a hateful and bigoted religion?

Indeed there won’t. If we celebrate every day we pumped the Jambos in a meaningful game. FFS.

In regard to Robinson, I am totally zen with him possibly picking up another job. We have to accept that, like players, managers are a sellable asset.

We don't want to lose players and we don't want to lose coaching staff, we do want to make money though.

Of course, I'm blasé because we are in a good position, the club looks attractive should we lose this manager. I feel my outlook would be different if we were lower league mid-table and Robinson had turned us around and was heading for a Championship victory (a lá Ross) and he was whipped away from us.

Just a wee correction.

Jimmy Nicholl is still named as the assistant for Northern Ireland FA.

Diarmuid O'Carroll is part of the back room team.
