A Photographic History Of Scottish Football

John Brown in his pre 'Bomber' days when he was actually a goalscoring midfielder for Dundee before going to Ibrox a few years later, seeing out the second half of his career booting opponents and screaming thinly veiled sectarian insults at youth team members and Italian team mates.

A 2-2 draw at Dens Park against Aberdeen from March 1986.

Jim Duffy and Vince Mennie join in the celebrations, the 'Derry' in the background is virtually identical and unchanged to this day, much like the main stand.

An Accies director was quoted in a Hamilton fanzine back in the day "We sold John Brown to Dundee because his knees had gone...."

Dens Park on this day in 1914. Arbroath 1 Dundee Hibs 1 in the Forfarshire Cup Final. 8,000 in attendance, a then Forfarshire Cup Final record. A week later the record was broken as 9 or 10,000 turned up at Dens to see Arbroath win the replay 2-1.

Trio of pre war stars of the Scottish game, Archie Coats having been a prolific scorer for Dundee netting more than a goal a game over a long career.

Alex McSpadyn was also a consistent player for over a decade with Thistle, and made a few appearances following the 1945 conclusion of the war.

James McInnes appears to have been a left half, and turned out for Newcastle during the war years. All three players had their careers truncated by military service.

Not sure if this is appropriate but it gives an insight into what was happening in Scottish football involving Celtic and Rangers in 1980 with footage that shows the Govan stand being built.

Some interesting comments made by a reporter that certain clubs make money off the back of this hatred.

Of course these two clubs and Scottish football have made massive strides in eliminating the sectarian divide in the last 44 years.

Brazil hosted Scotland for the first time at Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana stadium on July 5, 1972, in the Brazil Independence Cup Tournament. Brazil won (1-0) with Jairzinho scoring the winner ten minutes from the end.

Similar to the Main Stand and the 'Derry', Jim Duffy looks virtually identical and unchanged to this day.

Brown is an utter w@nk but he was a good player for Dundee until he decided to play the hard man at the deid club.

June 23, 1977, when Brazil hosted Scotland in a friendly at Rio de Janeiro's Maracana stadium. Brazil won (2-0) with Zico and Cerezo scoring the goals.

Bovril never made it to Brazil, had to make do with second best.

No, it's Danny McGrain, Sturrock and Roughie.

Fcuk I never saw them at first. 😜

That home kit is one of my favourites.

The dark blue, white shorts and red socks combo is just perfect imho.

The first ever Scottish Cup final took place today in 1874 with Queens Park beating Clydesdale 2-0 at the original Hampden Park. Clydesdale were a team active 1872-1881 attached to the cricket club of the same name from the Pollokshields area. There was another unrelated side with the same name from Rutherglen active 1883-1892.

Some absolutely superb strips there.  United, Falkirk, Dunfermline, Arbroath, Motherwell for example.

It doesn't specify, but what form of football was being played between Perth and Stirling there?

It speaks of "touching behind" (fnarr fnarr) but also Stirling winning by a goal.

Association football never still had touching down at this stage did it?

It'll be rugby. Until the turn of the century football and rugby results are often intermixed in the press.
