They have found cases in factories in Germany that were poorly ventilated, people working hard, and shouting, and people were infected up to 12m away. Also found in S Korea people got infected at churches by sitting in the same seat an infected person sat in the day before. So realistically masks should be mandatory everywhere in public all the time even outside. But bellends like the guy above won't accept it. You see. lads? This is the kind of well-researched, properly attributed information we need. Seriously, though - there are many more variables - orientation, ventilation, airflow, indoors/outdoors, numbers of people and their general movement in area, etc. It's very simple to just take possibly too many precautions rather than trust your judgment. As with one poster up above, I'm an H&S professional and I'll wear a mask most of the working day, and always when out in public. Part of it may be my being in a position where I have to set an example, but its mostly because I'd rather have a wee mark across the bridge of my nose than a ventilator rammed down my throat. My mask probably won't help that, but every individual who my actions persuade to follow suit makes everyone a wee bit safer, and normality a wee bit closer. I'd appreciate it if more people could put up with minor inconvenience for a wee while rather than whining about "ma assma", and finding loopholes to defy common sense. But maybe that's just me. I heard someone refer to mask-wearing as a "Socialist" behaviour, and I can absolutely get on board with that.

They're best to protect yourself, a mask too but a visor on top.

All you need to do is look around the world, other countries that are now in a much better place than we are have done these things, and that's how they got there. They don't live in an 'ideal' world either, they just have competent governance. We do not, and therein lies the problem. You have no idea what the consent level is amongst the general population for any particular measure and have just made that up. It was already demonstrated to you this was believed before the first lockdown and did not materialise, and we have seen virtually no protests with those that have occurred being miniscule in scale and laughed at by the populace. I don't have to define absolutely necessary, as the govt has already done this. They called it 'essential', so we can just stick to those guidelines. That would mean manufacturing and construction closed as they were in March, also respite care the same. We are going round in circles, you will now perform mental gymnastics to come up with some other convoluted pish after I have swatted this tripe away same as the rest. Don't bother, I'm not interested. Thinking = mental gymnastics in Pep world. Enjoy swatting the tripe, that sounds fun.

welshbairn
Highland's figures seem to be being affected more by clusters in Easter Ross than any general rise in the infection rate, mainly a couple of pubs in Dingwall and now care homes there and in Invergordon. They're the first in the region for the AZ vaccine to get doled out to the over eighties, so it looks like some targeting of highest risk areas is going on. Infection rate has gone from about 20/100,000 in early December up to 250 a few days ago, 175 yesterday and back up to 186 today on 7 day averages. Small outbreaks can have a big effect on the numbers in a low population area.

I don't think that anyone is consciously making a simplistic binary choice, but Covid is the disease du jour at the moment and it's all anyone talks about or thinks about. There's no doubt at that health boards are under intense strain, and there's also no doubt that they're prioritising covid treatment over other 'routine' cases. My sister-in-law has kidney cancer and she's had two check ups cancelled in the last 6 months to be replaced by an online consultation. Fortunately, she's in remission but as we all well know, when you've had cancer no check up is ever 'routine'. Like many, she's had to grin and bear it and she feels like she's sacrificing something for the 'greater good'. Because we're being overwhelmed with news and scientists and statistics and death tallies and whatever else, all to do with covid, people are sub-consciously prioritising it over every other single disease. But sooner rather than later, this is all going to come back to bite society. Hard. Cancer, mental health, God knows what else. We'll get through the covid pandemic soon enough, but we'll live for years with the side-effects......well, most of us will. others may not be quite as lucky.

Yeah, did you read what it said? Its the law in Spain as soon as you leave your house you must wear a mask at all times indoor or outdoor everywhere you go no matter what. That is not the case here, not even close. In Germany shops are limited by size of shop, here that isn't the case, and we don't require people to take trolleys to keep track of them. My local paper shop is about 20 square metres and allows up to 8 at a time, in Germany that would be 2. But that was mandated by government, that hasn't happened here.
