Mark Connolly
Looking forward to this week's round-up, both because I'll get points, and because deaths like Charlton usually produce my favourite part of the deadpool. Spoiler

Miguel Sanchez
Week 42 update One death this week, footballer Bobby Charlton: Sir Bobby Charlton obituary | Bobby Charlton | The Guardian I'm not going to post a quote for him because it's virtually impossible to summarise him in a few sentences. There are several articles on the Guardian's site about him, and I really recommend reading them. He retired twenty years before I was born so I can't really quantify the career he had outside of the statistics and honours, so adding context to that has been a welcome experience. In the time I've run the Dead Pool I'm not sure how many footballers there have been of Charlton's stature, in terms of what he meant to one club for so long. I've said before that as football fans we're all proud of players like Charlton in our clubs' history and hope for it in the present. Someone whose entire life is inseparable from the club and the community around it. That we're talking about someone able to do that for a club the size of Manchester United is a mark of how great he was. That so much of his success came after the 1958 Munich disaster is an even greater testament to his skill and character. With that in mind I actually lied - I'm going to post Man United's announcement which sums up what I've said quite well: Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton passes away aged 86 | Manchester United (manutd.com) Quote A graduate of our youth Academy, Sir Bobby played 758 games and scored 249 goals during 17 years as a Manchester United player, winning the European Cup, three league titles and the FA Cup. For England, he won 106 caps and scored 49 goals. Following his retirement, he went on to serve the club with distinction as a director for 39 years. His unparalleled record of achievement, character and service will be forever etched in the history of Manchester United and English football; and his legacy will live on through the life-changing work of the Sir Bobby Charlton Foundation. The club’s heartfelt sympathies are with his wife Lady Norma, his daughters and grandchildren, and all who loved him. Considering the current state of elite level football, I don't think people like Bobby Charlton can or will exist anymore. As we lose people like him from his generation this becomes more pronounced, and given the general state of Man United in the past ~ten years it's a message that becomes more stark as time goes on. While reading about him I did have a chuckle seeing the details of his final England appearance - World Cup quarter final against West Germany in 1970. They're up 2-1. Ramsey substitutes him to keep him fresh for the semi-final and they end up losing. At least some things in football remain constant. Outside of his caps and goal record, he had an unremarkable international career. Loads of you picked him. He died at 86 so he's worth 39 Base Points. A Vice-Captain bonus takes that to 59 points. mozam76
Lovely words Miguel. I always remember a chapter in Frank Taylor’s book, The Day a Team Died. It was the chapter surrounding what happened at Wembley in 1968 after they’d beaten Benfica and in particular the celebrations in London afterwards. Whilst the rest of the team were celebrating, Charlton snuck off to bed without getting involved. He couldn’t bring himself to celebrate having lost his mates at Munich ten years previous.
