Been a while since I read it so don't know if it's from Trainspotting or something Irvine Welsh said about his own experiences but, basically, he was saying how there were all these warnings from the Government about how weed turned people into crazy lunatics but then they saw with their own eyes how it done the opposite.

Then there were warnings about how people were dying because of speed but they never noticed anyone dying at the gigs where everyone was out of their tits on the stuff.

By the time they heard warnings about how deadly heroin was they didn't believe it until they were already smacked out of their tits and hooked to the stuff

Agreed, my main memory was being given the impression of ecstasy being very, very likely to kill you if you took one then hearing about my brother and his mates taking it lots of times and still being alive. Made you doubt everything they told you about heroin and crack.

I mind the images of Leah Bates being plastered everywhere growing up showing how this young, fit, healthy lassie only took one pill and died and you should steer well clear.

Years later ye find out she had taken half a pill, wasn't out dancing or that, and died because of water on the brain because she was following government advice to drink tonnes of water to stay hydrated while on disco biscuits. Poor lass.

Didn't Irvine Welsh play swanney in the film?
I preferred the book to the film, alot skipped or changes made to support characters that couldn't go into T2 that appears in porno.
I actually liked porno, just times had moved on from a lot of the premise and they couldn't use the book for much of the script.

Stop getting Bond Welsh wrong!

Swanney was played by Peter Mullan. Irvine Welsh played the other dealer, Mikey Forrester, who sold Renton his suppositories. He also appears in the sequel, where he seems to have been promoted to become a fence.

I don’t think that the government gave advice on how much water you should drink when taking ecstasy. People were told by their mates to drink water while taking pills, she took one and then drank seven litres of water in an hour and a half.

I remember it at the time as I was bang in the target group for things like this and I took E a few times years later. I do remember reading about the fact that at that time literally hundreds of thousands of pills were being taken every weekend.

I sometimes wonder if there have been any studies on the long term effects of recreational drug use. Mostly it’s people with severe drug addictions that are studied but what about people who took E every weekend for years in their 20s? Difficult to study but I’m sure it’d be interesting.

There are videos on Youtube with the director talking about how the scriptwriter couldn't make it work, ripped up the whole thing and started from a fresh perspective. I'll try find them later because if you watch them, you'll start to see where the film T2 actually comes from.  Maybe it'll help some of you appreciate it more.

Like your style 'Boz. Explain to folk why they are wrong when they claim not to like a film. Always said you were the Mark Kermode of the Pars support.

I read a study that linked recreational ecstasy use with loss of short term memory

I can't believe you're all talking about Trainspotting and  nobody has mentioned my mate Tony who absolutely steals the scene where Begbie lobs the glass, by walking in front of the camera with a pint...

Just check my posting history.

I had my first E when I was 16 and my last when 1 was 35 (back in Scotland for New Year).  At least 3 weekend in the month I would have E/coke, everyday I would smoke dope.  Amounts at the weekend would be from 2 to 15 and then add on the jellies/Valium and booze. Never was into speed that much after the all nighters when I was 20.  Coke, I never really got into in a big way. Only took acid about 20 times in total.

Some good times.

The Crosslands was my local for a bit when I stayed in Wilton Street.  They've turned it into some kind of restaurant now, unfortunately.

It's still a pub as well. Until recently it was the Kelbourne Saint, but it's now reopened at Francos, so it's nice they're still acknowledging their past.

People who overdid speed are the most frazzled in later life in my experience.
