The whole spectrum has moved way to the right and the old 'progressive' tories were largely silenced by The Liar's purge of the party when he assumed power in 2019. Because the media control the narrative it is difficult for any, even slightly, left wing party to make any real progress. The overall tax burden in Spain is lower yet there is free further and higher education, the public health service is excellent, there appears to be far more police on patrol and there is no energy or mortgage crisis to name just a few examples. An ever burgeoning welfare budget. It sounds good, but it's not true. Marginal rates for high earners were set at 50% (now 45%) under Gordon Brown in 2009. In addition the Personal Income limit has been raised to £100,000 from circa £30k, so middle earners now get to keep their personal allowances (so effectively gaining on the margins). Taxes are a blunt instrument though, we do need to raise them on middle and high income tax payers, but we also need to go after wealth, so establishing levies on wealth and assets (particularly those owned by anonymous offshore entities). 3 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
