Murray’s Maestros versus Ferguson’s Fanatics, 27 January (AI “improved” title for neutrals)

Recommended Posts

Poor team selection and tactics have cost us points today and not for the first time this season.

Consolation Partick only draw as do United.

Really need to get back to winning league games when they next arise.

We made it very very easy with no actual defenders

Fairly sure we had defenders playing today. We were missing one decent centre half.

Kev still doesn’t look very mobile either. I assume he’s still not quite right.

I’m also sure we had a midfielder as a centre half too. It doesn’t help that Liam Dick was the target of all their attacks. Never mind though eh, at least we showed some character in the second half.

Second half a massive improvement without looking like actually scoring enough to get a result. Very weak from a lot of the players today, Murray was poor, Samuel had the better of him all game, Connolly was a waste of a jersey and Easton was off it from the first minute he came on. On top of that, Kev looks unfit, probably still injured.

How Dylan Corr can’t get into that defence is a mystery. Belief has totally gone since Tannadice. To be honest, can’t even see us getting past the first play off game with a defence that throws in goals so easily. Typical Rovers, back to earth with a bang.

Would any of the 1,000s (thousands) of home fans help me by sharing the news on whether Samuel's hat trick was a perfect one?

Perfectly shite defending if that counts?

It’s not like you’re not used to this. It happens most seasons. In the Winter 🥶 our hopes die. Then, with the warmth of Spring they re-emerge.

I reckon the way to keep your sanity is to watch Rovers until October, then find something better to do until March.

That's entirely on Murray, I'm afraid. Starting a back 3 consisting of one CB is asking for trouble, especially when there are no wing backs to provide some help defensively. You can live with it when we have a number of players injured, but doing so today was a conscious choice. Corr could've played, Brown could've played at CB. Watson isn't fit, clearly, but we had choices there. Playing that back line as a conscious choice just comes across as unserious.

That's now six of our last seven games that we've taken the lead in. We have one win. Even then, the opposition equalised. In addition to stopping a quite alarming flow of goals, there is also an urgent need to improve game management so we stop losing leads. It's becoming very tedious.

It's ludicrous to consider that a back line of Masson/Corr/Hannah could possibly have been an improvement on our starting choice, but it might have been. If you made that Millen to the right or Brown joining Corr in the middle, I think it certainly would have been better. Dick certainly has had much better games than today.

Murray clearly isn't 100%, Watson clearly isn't ready to go, and is only on the bench to get people off IM's back about his status, IM doesn't have any confidence in Corr and Masson, and Dick and Mullin are not fit for purpose in a three back scheme. Dick is usually a good defensive LB, but asking him to pull in as part of a back three and also charge forward didn't work today, just like it didn't work with Mullin against Livi. Both are acceptable fullbacks when paired with TWO CB's, with a single CB they are torn between IM's pressure forward strategy and the basics of defending.

Brown and Byrne as a DM pair to support the defence isn't working, Brown as a CB isn't using the players we already have, Byrne isn't half the player he was with Stanton paired with him, again we're back to a fragile team that broke when Sam got injured. IM has failed to compensate for the loss of Sam simply because he's tried to plug people into Sam's role rather than rejiggering the whole strategy and admitting that Sam's role is irreplaceable IN THAT FORMATION. The bone-headed stubbornness of continuing to try to play a formation we don't have the players for is what caused this losing streak

IM is a capable manager, but he needs to show the ability to adapt to his available players, not a desire to fit his available players into a formation they don't suit. The 3-6-1 is a choice to allow our playmakers, of which we have many, freedom, but it demands solid defending, something we have lacked recently. The 4-2-3-1 and 4-1-3-2 demand a player of Stanton's skills in the middle, and while Turner may be close, he's not shown that capacity yet.

I'd say 4-4-2, 4-3-3 or even a 4-1-4-1 would seem to suit our players better right now, at least until Sam is 100%, and also might be necessary if Zak is now our only "heavy" forward with jack taking that shoulder knock.

Superb performance, having Samuel as the target man and give defenders a tough time allows Mckay to come deeper and link up. Think Shaw looked much better and hit a beautiful pass for Samuel’s first goal (I think).

Was hard to see from our end but our 2nd looked like Dabrowski had a mare but the highlights will clear that up.

Cammy Kerr is as described by the Dundee fans 110% effort.

JCM and Savage both looked solid, Savage maybe looked the nervier of the two. Can see why we’ve signed so many centre backs with all 3 that started coming off.

Gilmour and Anderson both looked good in the middle and Carson looked decent when he came on.

What a difference it is having folk who can come off the bench and make an impact.
