Aston Villa 4-2 Nottingham Forest

My football-mad 7 year old wanted tickets to an EPL game for his Christmas. We picked a cracker.

Villa coasted to 3-0 up but switched off and were a bit fortunate to still be ahead when by the time they came back to life. A deserved win overall though. Watkins, Bailey, McGinn, Douglas Luiz all impressive.

Strange hearing the ‘Super John McGinn’ song in a brummie accent and about how he’s Unai Emery’s man. Got sung frequently and loudly too.

Very impressed by Villa Park. A proper football place steeped in history, and well looked after over the years. Would happily go back and my son already asking when we can.

Good seats too - decent view of 4 of the goals. Half blinded by the sun though.

Time to kill down there and the wee guy asked if we could see some of the other grounds in the area (he’s destined to be posting on this thread if it’s still going a decade or so from now!) So we swung by Wolves, West Brom, Walsall, Stoke, and Port Vale over yesterday and today. And excellent football weekend!

You've just come off a 14 hour flight. It's 10:30am, and you can't check into your digs until 3pm. Do you:

(a) find a cafe to hang out in until check-in time;

(b) crash out in the airport or hotel lobby;

(c) drop your luggage in a locker and head straight to a third-division football match?

I chose Option (c) and hence found myself at one of the coldest football matches I have ever been at: YSCC vs Kataller Toyama, in Japan's J3 league in Yokohama. I have some family connections to Toyama, so have always had a bit of a soft spot for Kataller even though they're not my Japanese team - so with that in mind, I headed round to the away end and joined the travelling support. About 300 supporters had made the journey over from Toyama, and sang for the full 90 mins in the pishing rain and freezing cold complete with drums and massive banners. As a few of us have said on the J.League thread, one of the great things about Japanese games is that there's always a good atmosphere but without any aggro...although the fact there were guys in just their Kataller tops, with no jackets or umbrellas, getting frozen and soaked as they sang makes me think that every team in the world is going to have one or two nutters in their support!

Game itself finished 1-1...I missed the first 15 mins coming from the airport and so missed the YSCC goalie being caught 40 yards outside his box, but saw YSCC take their equaliser very well with a diving header on the end of a cross. Toyama came into it and were maybe unlucky not to win it. Fun wee day out though!

A lower league football match in Japan.

A small sports stadium in heavy rain.

Outstanding! Best way to recover from a long flight is to get straight outside. Have a great trip! Very envious, I’ve always wanted to visit Japan.

Visit to "probably the best away day in the SPFL" last Saturday. Steak and Black Pudding pie, Tutties, 2 ginormous smokies to take home. Mixed feelings about it as we don't really want to be there next season...

Burntisland Shipyard 3-3 Crossgates Primrose (3-4 on pens)

An all Fife Friday football in the East of Scotland Cup 1st Round. A first visit for us to Shippy. Didn't even know this was on until a casual check of Futbology but as it's now only 15 minutes from the house out we went.

Did Hibs gift this pitch on the mid 90s? A bit on the slopey side. Add to the that the old dressing rooms are now the toilets it's a strange affair. I'm sure it'll be magnificent on a gorgeous night in May but this was wet and windy in Early March. The hurricane meant it was all Crossgates and two early goals for the Premier side had a few fearing a hiding. However, the hosts score just at the break and with the wind the second half score a deserved equaliser. A penalty that everyone in the ground seemed to miss puts Crossgates back ahead but a last second stramash sees and equaliser for the hosts and we go to penalties. Or so I thought. Its extra time 🙄. I cannot urge FIFA, UEFA, SFA whoever. Please get rid of extra time. It's not all Italy v West Germany 1970. Just skip to penalties. We've got a story for when we write the book though. Floodlights fail at the end of the first half. So even more delay. I know we can leave anytime but seeing this through to the end now. 4-3 Crossgates on pens in  the end. Wet cauld stiff. Wouldn't change it  for the world.

We've ticked it off, we'll be back on a nicer night. Shippy a credit to the 8th tier Crossgates from the 6th advance.

Back at The Walks today.

Kings Lynn Town v South Shields.

A point midweek away at Alfreton was decent. A win today would be massive.

Tweedmouth Rangers 1-3 Kirkcaldy and Dysart

After the Friday night to remember in Burntisland is over the border today for more East of Scotland Cup action. We were at Old Shielfield last season but Tweedmouth have since moved next door to share with Berwick in the big ground. I can just picture @HibeeJibee's face at the state of the pitch. Three teams sharing this combined with heavy showers has turned this a bit quagmiry (technical term).

A longer walk from Berwick Station than I remember it being sees us at the ground in plenty time. Just as well as the pie hut is in what is usually the directors lounge. Very confusing.

Tweedmouth score very early but John Smith scores twice to give are new local team the lead and that is how it stays. Btw I'm still not 100% sure John Smith actually exists and that the Tweedmouth tannoy announcer didn't just make it up. Special mention to the home goalkeeper. Best player on a very heavy pitch.

I've always enjoyed Berwick and Shielfield so delighted for the chance to come back. Hopefully Berwick Rangers Men and Women can reach a solution with Tweedmouth because the pitch is in a sorry state at the moment.

Hill of Beath Hawthorn v West Calder United. East of Scotland league cup round 1. HT 2-0 FT 4-3. Attendance 120ish. Ticket £8 programme £2.

Premier Division V Fourth tier. And the first half showed it as Haws dominated and really should've been more than two up at the break. Goals fro. Ross Allum and a own goal.

West Calder improved in the second half and took the game more to the hosts. They got a goal back through a penalty, before Ross Allum completed his hatrick to make it 4-1 with two beautiful finishes from outside the box, one left the other right footed.

The visitors though got themselves back in it with two goals, one when the host goalkeeper made a mess playing out from the back.

Despite their efforts though they couldn't forsake extra time. Hawthorn held on for a deserved win in this thriller.

Kiers park is a cracking wee ground too. As are the pies

Kings Lynn Town 3-1 South Shields

Att 841

Best I've seen the Linnets play this season. Compact and compressing play well when not in possession and carrying some threat forward. Stephens and Margetts pounced on an error by the goalkeeper giving Margetts a tap in.

A break up the park midway through the first half saw Margetts again on the scoresheet with a great half volley finish from the edge of the box.

With the second half barely underway Lynn were caught by a long ball and it's 2-1. With Lynn edging the second half, South Shields did have opportunities which were wasted. Then at the death, sub Castro strokes a fine curling finish from 18 yards low in off the keepers right post, sending the crowd home happy. Coulson an absolute rock at center half for the Linnets but wee Cam Hargreaves bossed the middle of the park for me today. My man of the match.

Big, big, win for the Linnets.

Tranent 3 Kilwinning Rangers 0 (ht 2-0).

South Challenge Cup Q-Final at Foresters Park. A comfortable win for the Belters who progress to a home semi-final against EK. First half goals from Cammy Ross (I think) and Scott Gray plus a third from Ross. The Buffs no 15 McCalman has one of the longest throws in the universe.
Foresters is always a good place for a visit but there seems to be a dearth of decent boozers in Tranent and none near the ground.

Edinburgh City 0-2 Cove. Initial plan for today was to head to Dunbar but weather put pay to that so instead ended up being lazy and just heading to Meadowbank to watch Edinburgh City v Cove. Game of two halves with Cove dominating the first half scoring a good goal then missing a number of other chances to add to their lead. City keeper made a couple of good saves as well. Second half was dominated by City but they just could not score and on one of their few attacks in the second half Cove did.

Heading up to Elgin in a few weeks. Looking around the places to park and i am wondering if anyone has parked at the leisure centre nearby and how busy it is? It does say parking at the stadium, but again, not sure how busy and at a push the railway station which is about a mile or so walk.

There's a massive car park about 200 meters from the ground on your left as you turn up the street to go borough Briggs
