The European football level St. Mirren FC 2024/25 thread

Recommended Posts

No surprises there, as soon as he was suspended this was always the likely outcome. If you'd asked any St Mirren fan before the incident which player is most likely to get into a drunken fight in a city centre takeaway I think all of us would have said Shaun Rooney. He's just that type of person.

It's a big footballing loss for us above anything else. He had been the one summer signing who had established himself as first pick and he was playing well. I thought he was our best player across all four European Games, of course it was him who scored our first goal in continental competition since the 1980's against Valur. His famous shithousery in getting the equaliser against SK Brann will also live long in the memory.  For better and worse, he certainly made an impact in his two month long St Mirren career.  He'll probably end up at Ross County or St Johnstone or something and go on to have a good season.

For us it's back to the right back problem that plagued us throughout last season after Strain got injured. It was Ryan Flynn and Conor McMenamin there last season, neither of whom are natural right backs. This season I guess it's going to be Marcus Fraser and Elvis Bwomono, also neither of whom are natural right backs.

Such a waste.

Was genuinely great for us but he seems like an absolute toby of a guy off the field.

Obviously there's still a lot of clarification in regards to what happened but regardless a lot of clubs probably won't want to deal with the potential future headache they might have to deal with.

Decisive which is good.

But what a stupid guy. Leaves us absolutely f**ked as well until January.

What was the loophole that allowed us to sign Dunne outside of the transfer window but would prevent us picking up a free agent right back?

From memory Elvis must have signed not far off this date last year but had to wait until January to play. Does the free agent has to have had their last registration with the SFA or something to be able to play straight away?

Different transfer windows in Iceland prevented Elvis playing as he was still registered at his Icelandic side while our window was closed.

We can sign any free agent on the market outside a transfer window as long as they were a free agent when our window closed and never became one afterwards.

Example, Rooney now can't sign for a club until January unless he goes somewhere that currently has an open transfer window.

Dunne was a free agent and hadn’t been registered with a club outside the transfer window closing.

It must have been more than just drunken shenanigans if his contract has terminated. St Mirren deserve a lot of credit for this as he was a decent asset but they put the clubs reputation first.

That takes some going with your support :)

TBH we were all thinking it 😂

On Rooney, I'm proud of the club here. Damaging our chances of success this season in favour of doing the right thing is the total opposite of what you often see from football clubs, so well done Saints.

St Mirren have done the right thing here. No immediate reactions, gather the facts and let it settle a bit and then do what needs doing. Rooney is a silly boy. Always likely to do something stupid, he is wired that way, so no massive surprise.

On the pitch, he'd be good for most teams, but with this, no one will touch him. His only option here is a very very humble and public apology and owning his actions, but even then, don't see anyone picking him up.

Fully support St Mirrens actions here.

Wish we had the balls to do same with MacPherson.

I wonder what " mutual consent " means in this case. I can't imagine we've payed him off.

I have almost no doubt that you have.

The club wont want the adverse publicity, the player probably knows he is now damaged goods  for another gig, but he could sit it out and take his contracted salary.

Some kind of NDA'd separation agreement (including some cash from the remainder of his contract) suits all concerned.

Cannot see any club touching him until his case has been heard.

St Johnstone like St Mirren are a family orientated club, there is no way we touch him IMO

Silly lad

Livi or Clyde will take him, no f**ks given

It sounds like legal action is proceeding, St Mirren have been informed and taken appropriate steps. If there's going to be media coverage of any legal proceedings it sounds a lot better if they're saying he is no longer with the club. It's also befitting of their claimed status as a family club.

This will rumble on but St Mirren appear to have acted professionally and impeccably throughout. Well done to them - assuming there are people there who know the full story, I'm amazed there haven't been any leaks.
