  3. Was my mum's funeral this morning. I'm absolutely knackered. Didn't get much sleep last night but that was mainly due to the shite pillows my older brother and his wife provided! Well they weren't actually shite, just not ones I like/use. Was worried how the funeral was but was over really quickly. Did a wee reading of something I wrote and was glad I was able to do it. When we were walking behind her coffin going in to the crematorium I had the thought that I was looking at a stark dose of reality. Was all a bit surreal this morning getting in the fancy big car to ride behind the hearse and walking past everyone to the front row when we got to the crematorium. Thought the old curtain close was going to be rough but I was ok. The photo montage to music got a few folk but mostly there were chuckles, as we'd picked some amusing ones to go with the nice ones. Having a wee laugh at some of the silly ones helped. Thankfully the funeral went well (you know what I mean) and was really nice to see loads of family. Insert the usual cliche about funerals and weddings. Glad I decided not to drink today. Plenty of beers and other stuff was had after. No judging those who did, but I can get emotional when drinking if I'm not careful/have heightened emotions. Pleased that it's all done with now (the funeral I mean; we're getting a headstone and burying her ashes in the cemetery in the village she lived in/my dad lives in, but that won't be for a bit yet). A little worried that things might suddenly 'catch up with me' at some point over the next few days/week, but I think I'm going to be ok.

  4. Today was my final session of radiotherapy on my leg. Only downside is that in the last week a couple of blisters have appeared (this wasn't unexpected and no cause for alarm) so they will need the dressing changed daily, for the next week or two. But at least to begin with this will be done at my doctor's surgery which is within walking distance; no need to get up at the crack of dawn (lovely girl) and get the bus out to the hospital.

  5. It's not about absolute purity of beliefs. It's about choosing someone who will protect the rights of those she serves. The crux of her argument is that while she may disregard the civil rights of gay people, may feel it is wrong for folk to have children outside of marriage, that it's OK because these are already enshrined rights and she isn't going to tamper with them. Yet as First Minister, she may be called on to protect those rights, there may be calls to enhance those rights or those policies that may be to the advantage of those groups. Is that going to her priority? If the Tories in their likely dying days of government decided to implement cuts that would massively disadvantage single parents, would Forbes use political capital to protect that? Or if they came back after gay rights, now or ten years down the line - would Forbes see that as something she would fight for? She isn't going into bat for the GRR after all. What ever you think of it, it was passed with massive cross party support, but because she personally doesn't like the content of the bill she isn't willing to expend her efforts on protecting the wider devolution settlement. So she clearly isn't taking the tack that her faith is a private matter, or something more malleable than the strict orthodoxy of the church that she finds comfort in. Her faith informs her, helps shape her view of the world. Well, fine - there is, I gather, a great comfort in the idea that a higher power can guide you. That's not why she's being pilloried. She wants to put herself up in the gallery and ask people to vote for her, by extension she is putting up her beliefs - formed in part from her faith. There is no way to shield herself that way. Folk can and will make up their minds, not that they don't like religious people but that they believe that her views - informed by that faith - make her an unreasonable candidate to protect the rights and policies those people want to see kept safe.

  8. She gave them red meat or she gave them it straight, take your pick. In politics there is such a thing as collective responsibility and I'm pretty sure Kate Forbes is aware that her winning the leadership wouldn't be a mandate for her to legislate hellfire and damnation across the Scottish nation. There's a grown-up debate needed here about where Scotland should be headed and that includes a whole raft of boring but very important issues outside of the current feeding frenzy. If Kate Forbes or anyone else with strong religious convictions were to deliver improvements in education, drug deaths, homelessness and ambulance waiting times then even the nation's youth might be impressed. I have no absolutely truck with religion but I've equally no time for those who insist on absolute purity of their own beliefs in anyone wishing to run for high public office. Tolerance works both ways.

  10. If your pal doesn't want people laughing at him he should stop posting drivel. MSPs withdrawing their support from someone who thinks gay people shouldn't be treated fairly is completely acceptable. If you think that's a witch hunt then that rather speaks volumes about your character tbh.

  18. She quite literally said that she would have voted to deny people the right to marry had she been in parliament at the time the bill was being voted on because she disagrees with them being able to do so, while standing for a post which would give her a great influence in making rules. That she wouldn't actually bring forward a bill on the matter now doesn't mean the people whose rights she'd have liked to deny are going to shrug their shoulders, ignore it and gleefully vote for her. Other religious parliamentarians, including one who is a member of the same church and same party, are not under attack for holding religious views, because somehow they've managed to reconcile sincerely holding a religious belief with not believing same sex couples should have fewer rights than heterosexual couples. It's almost as if no one is being criticised for being religious and the crux of the issue is holding a homophobic viewpoint, regardless of the underlying reason for holding it.

  23. I’d just drop out of the conversation. He’s an attention seeker looking for a reaction through being controversial. All decent fans know the stuff about Norrie and Craig is disgusting and needs eradicated. We’ve known that for years. The fact he wants to keep it going through constantly discussing it and not only that he wanted to know lyrics of the death of a teenage laddie is fucking sick. My advice would be don’t get involved in any conversation with him.

  26. I'd be surprised if the delay till today was much more than agreeing how long it would run. I have a feeling the board wanted till the end of the season and he wanted a bit of commitment. I may be wrong but that's what my gut tells me. Stage 2 - Competent assistant to add candour and insight and a first team coach do the donkey work behind the scenes please. Stage 3 - Continue Sean Goss redemption arc (2023 version), surround Butcher in cotton wool between games and give a wee turn to McKinstry and Tierney who did f**k all wrong in the last few months. Stage 4 - Sign up the good guys, release the dross, recruit better than we have done this summer. #bitogrey

  31. I think we are struggling with this which, along with a few other issues around health, has left me at my lowest for a long time. When my wife and I adopted our little boy my mother in law had said she would help out at least one day a week which was important as my own mum and dad live about 100 miles away. However a couple of things have conspired against us in that her health has deteriorated rapidly and our son requires additional support which she just can't handle. He is currently on the waiting list to be assessed (they have ruled out autism) but that is looking like a 2 year waiting list. I've tried nannying services and things like Kings Camp and both were happy to take him on even though we advised he required additional support. Both fell through when they contacted us to say they suddenly decided they didn't have enough resource to support him. He is now most of the way through primary two and he still hasn't been in school for a full day yet because they say there are no positions available in the assisted support classes and don't have the resources within the mainstream classes to provide enough support all day. While this has annoyed us I can see it from both sides and I don't think antagonising the school further will help. We both work full time so often end up looking after the wee one when we have to pick him up early from school and working at nights to catch up. Essentially the only break either of us get is when the one of us goes to do our own thing and the other looks after the wee one. Don't get me wrong we spend most weekends doing things together and have great fun but now and again you do need a little break as he can be really hard work. My biggest issue is I have been using the spare time I get to drink to excess (mostly as a stress coping mechanism i think) which then leaves me struggling the next day and feeling even more guilty. We have found a local branch of The Yard and that does help a fair bit in terms of giving my wife a break. Just hope that the longer days somehow brings some respite and the chance for either of us to get some time when he is in bed. ETA That's his swimming lessons just phoned my wife this morning to say that a shortage of staff means they won't be able to cover the additional resource he needs. That's cancelled as well now. It never rains... I've just read that horrifyingly long winded post and it portrays the wee man as some devil child. He is genuinely one of the nicest wee boys you will meet but just cannot concentrate on anything for more than about 3 seconds and is stubborn beyond belief. I've no idea if it's genetic (his birth mum has six other boys all by different fathers and in care now with varying degrees of learning difficulties) or if it's partly our fault for the way we have brought him up.

  32. I get paying for the mascot experience. A lot of kids want to do it and making some cash is perfectly fine. £312 however is beyond scandalous. I booked two 3 night stays at Craig Tara this year for 7 people for less than that. That's actually made me a little angry. Asking that at any time is contemptible never mind during a cost of living squeeze.

  33. This is exactly what I see. He's not terrible but his positional sense is absolutely shocking for this level. I've lost count the number of times he had no clue where his man was. His pace gets him out of trouble a lot but for me I'd be looking for a player who doesn't have to cover his arse constantly and instead just does the basics right. I'd be happy to see most of them f**k off completely which would sort out that problem. And we thought footballers were precious. The state of some folk after Bartley's interview He's not said anything remotely confrontational in that interview and if it offends them then they aren't the kind of players I want here. We've been too soft for too long. Hopefully we bring in folk who know exactly what's expected of them next season and try hard as a result.

  40. Absolutely stunned by this news, like many I thought the announcement was simply him stepping back from his quite public presence at Hibs to fight the illness. I never really know what to say at moments like this, perhaps best to say nothing at all then, but I've got some reflections. I remember him sitting down with various podcasts about Hibs in the last year or so, even when things were bad for the club. He didn't have to do this of-course, but he genuinely seemed to want to reach out and understand the views of the fans, even when those views were at the time mixed to put it politely. To do all this in good humour at a time of extreme personal difficulty for himself is as others have said a mark of the man. I also remember the day when he bought the club, the pictures with him, Leanne, Rod and Sir Tom Farmer holding scarves aloft and talking brightly about the future. Since then he threw himself into things, and the more time goes on it seems he did actually get the big calls right, even if they're only starting to bear fruit now. I think each of us has their own experience with this disease affecting the people we hold dear or even ourselves, the moment it's first talked about I remember vividly, your world changes. My thoughts are obviously with his family and friends, particularly with his children as to my mind nothing compares to the pain. I hope this isn't in bad taste but I was introduced to this song on the big screens Ron installed. It was played as a backing track to pictures of members of the Hibs community that sadly passed away during Covid, it made me greet at the time and I may well do the same now. RIP Ron, you'll be remembered, you'll be missed.

  41. The thing all you moaners have to remember is we almost got relegated last season so not finishing the bottom two should be celebrated and treated like winning a trophy. The style of play will improve once we're safe, the shitfest tactics of the past 3 years have simply been to keep us in the division. Its lucky none of you were fans in the 80s, you should be grateful for what youve seen because we'll stop overachieving and return to our rightful level soon enough.
