After defeating Abdish ATA-Kant 3-0 (4-1 agg) at home in the AFC Cup Inter-zonal Final (East) last Wednesday then the Jets 3-1 in Newcastle on Saturday the Mariners play their deferred and last regular A-League season game tonight at home to Adelaide United. The Mariners just need a draw to finish top and win the Premier’s Plate, lose and it goes to Wellington Phoenix. They will then head to Muscat in Oman to face Al-Ahed of Lebanon in the AFC Final on Sunday (early Monday morning here). Then it back for the A-League Semi Final, away on 11 May, home on 18 May. If they finish top of the table then SF opponent will be the lowest ranked Elimination Final winner otherwise it will be the highest ranked.

Just looked this up and saw CCM won the Asian Cup final versus Al-Ahed, with Alou Kuol, brother of ex-Hearts and CCM player Garang Kuol scoring the winner. A shame for Lee Erwin though... yeah, Lee Erwin, former Ross County and St Mirren man, playing up front as top striker for the best team in Lebanon. Fair play, that's up there with Marcus Haber dominating Cambodian football in terms of just pure weird.

  2. Randomly decided to watch the highlights of the Melbourne Victory vs. Melbourne City game, didn't realise until it hit extra time that it was a play-off game 😅 Very enjoyable watch, and that Victory keeper Paul Izzo, I think Scottish football might've learned to be way of Aussie keepers thanks to Mark Birighitti, but what a performance from him. Kept his 10-man side in the game the whole way, then saving 3 penalties and scoring his own in the shootout was just tremendous.

At all levels of the pyramid, only the league champions can participate in promotion playoffs. If the champion is ineligible for promotion the game/playoff is scrapped (The Highland League and 3 feeder league play off this season for example, so Strathspey are safe from relegation) or any other eligible clubs (EK in this instance) receive a bye to the next round.

Can't wait for a B team to win the Lowland League, the amount of heads shooting straight into the atmosphere on the forum will be tremendous.

Livi have a fair few players on their books that I'd like to see us act like vultures over. Not all of them - obviously, but fair few individually could add something to our team IMO.

James Penrice has already been snapped up by Hearts but Scott Pittman is one I've always liked. Would add a bit of bite, some much needed experience and energy for our midfield.

Yengi has been mentioned by the ITK poster on the other forum as a possibility. Bruce Anderson and Nouble are both out of contract as well.

I would've been the first to agree with you on Pittman about 6 years ago, but he looks a shadow of the player that was key to leading Livi to the Premiership. The rumour re: Yengi is weird, as the poster is usually reliable but signing him would require a fee as he's only months into a 2.5 year deal. Perhaps there are some variety of relegation clauses inserted in there, but I clearly wouldn't know. Lively forward with plenty potential but seems a bit temperamental, still would be a top striker for Livi in the Championship if he stays there.

Anderson and Nouble are obviously worth a look, it'll be interesting to see how true the long-held rumours of Anderson signing a PCA with Killie are. Nouble will head back down south to the National League imo.

Donnelly had a really poor game and him and Dodgson weren’t knowing when to overlap each other - in turn they just kept passing back the way. The difference with Shaughnessy missing out of the defence was palpable.

Was sat thinking this the whole second half. For all the flak that Shaughnessy received in the weeks before his injury, he was clearly the leader at the back and was the lynchpin of that back 3. Without him, it's pretty crazy to me to play that formation without him. Lamie can't play that central role organising  the others, and Donnelly looks lost without Shaughnessy.

Rarely have I went up and down in rating a player as much as I have with Donnelly, which I put down to confidence at that age. When he's comfortable with the setup he's a top player at this level, but when everything else is shaky he becomes the shakiest. He's got the makings of a really good player, but for now without Shaughnessy we surely should be sticking to a back four with Lamie and Portales, and Dodgson and McGhee either side if we're wanting any more points this season. It gets the most out of Dodgson at LB and keeps things simple, as without Joe it becomes a mess.

As for the club as a whole, the aim now is to get our first win in the top six post-split in 12 attempts and over 20 years. Not since Caballero's double at Parkhead have we enjoyed a victory in this position, and doing so would be a decent end to a good season. Naturally, heading to Tynecastle to get a win is a rough task for anyone right now, but we usually are decent at nicking something from Hearts there and we were unlucky not to do so last time so with their season also pretty much sorted we should be looking to restore our pride next week.

  6. Outclassed, no other word for it. Thoroughly disappointing and the European dream gone, but that won't define our season. Very impressive from St Mirren, probably should had Europe wrapped up ages ago on that performance. Such an unlikeable team, but that's how you want your team to be.

Makes you wonder how bad that 'food bug' was in the 4-0 game. I would say best of luck in Europe to Saints, but I'm fully expecting you and Killie to embarrass Scottish football this summer.

  7. I've called Dundee shite many times in my life, but rarely have I found cause to use the word "surprisingly" before it. Just not handled St Mirren's press whatsoever, Robinson got his tactics spot on. If it didn't take them 40 minutes to get a shot on target they'd be up by a couple more, plenty good chances gone to waste.

Even when we've had chances we've cracked under the pressure, McCowan's missed chance was unforgivable. Our best player having one of his worst games of the season in such a big game is gutting. Doc needs to change tactics quick and get some confidence into these players.

    Similar to Hibs last season.
Start with a minow - they got a team from Andorra. Win that and get a tougher team, they got Luzern from Switzerland which they won too, before getting bodied by Villa in the playoff round.

As both teams have zero UEFA club coefficient would that mean we'd be more likely to draw a tougher team in that first round, or does Scotland's collective coefficient's high standing currently lift us above those teams in seedings?

St Mirren absolutely have to win this. Can't wait for the scenes on the last game of the season when it's still all to play for and Derek McInnes fields half a team and no goalkeeper to help his pal Doc.

Doc saying on the Open Goal interview that McInnes is the most competitive animal alive didn't help my confidence on any leniancy from them even if it's a dead rubber for them. We're still due our yearly result at Tynecastle after the near miss last time.

The last big meaningful game between the sides saw Cody Cooke score the sloppiest hat trick of all time.

That game meant nothing for us, beyond introducing some of our young talent like Robertson and Mulligan, and Cameron would've played too if Darren O'Dea didn't decide to get sent off in his last game.

To win independence you need as broad a church (forgive the pun) as possible.

That is what the SNP should be. Fiscal Conservatives, Socialists, Greens, Centrists...whatever. As long as they firmly believe Scotland would be better off as an independent country.

A face to put up against every unionist party that claims to be any of the above and show voters why independence will be better for them.

Just indulging green left wing policies that have been a disaster narrows your voter base and leads to....this.

I can't pretend to be fully interested in what the SNP should be (or in what politics is nowadays tbh), but I agree with the sentiment of compromise being key, it's what politics is all about and it's the only way independence will be attained with the current situation. Independence is and should be treated as the main goal that we need a united front for bar none, and all the other issues can then be properly reassessed once it has been achieved. For now they're just distractions that cause division and keep independence further away from happening. Once we have freedom, then we best decide how Scotland as a country feels about these issues without the constant needling from Westminster.

For all the misgivings about Kate Forbes, the SNP need someone who can focus on the main task at hand and not get sidetracked by more personal goals until progress is made towards independence, and if Forbes is the best person to do that then it's the right decision. It's a person who non-SNP independence supporters might find more palatable in the short to medium term which could be big for getting things moving again, and I do believe her more personal ideological beliefs would find it hard to get much footing even with her in charge. I certainly think giving her the gig would do more than giving it to Swinney, what a waste of time that would be.

    ...yeah, it's nice.

  11. I usually dread games with high stakes due to the emotional toll they take but I'm absolutely buzzing for this one. We have nothing to lose with our already successful season secured, while St Mirren have the pressure of expectation with having held that position for so long, as well as coming so close last year.

Obviously it's very unlikely to be like the 4-0 game, but I am feeling good about this for whatever reason, I think our squad is in a great frame of mind for it and eager to push further. Hopefully Cameron's hamstring tweak was minor enough to shake off for this one, but our depth right now doesn't have me worried even if he isn't available.

St Mirren and Dundee fans desperate to add the "St Johnstone got relegated" trophy to their "made the top six" cup already in the bag.

St Mirren might do a open top bus parade, but suspect Dundee will go down the DVD route.

We'd be better suited just making a commemorative canvas displaying all of your best takes throughout the season, though you'd probably need one the size of McDiarmid Park just to fit them all in.
