OK, but is he competent in his position? Also what is that position?

Aye, definitely competent - likely won’t be brilliant but won’t be a disaster either. He’s a right back but has spent most of his time with us playing at wing back and  it’s not a role he’s looked comfortable in or suited to playing. He’s done ok when covering as the right centre half of a back three, although I wouldn’t want him there long term.

Confidence might be a bit of an issue. Seems to me like he’s a player that really needs an arm around the shoulder and I think he got the opposite from Steven MacLean, before then being binned by Levein with him training with the kids the last few weeks.

That's a pretty solid loan signing for you guys. As above, he's not some flying wing back, but if you want just an out and our right back, he will be pretty decent.

When he first came in, he looked like he might develop into a decent enough premiership RB or RCB, but has stalled a bit and played in a position he clearly wasn't comfortable with. When confident and played in proper position, he is at a level somewhere between Championship and Premiership. If thst helps...

Aye. RB in a back 4, at Championship level, is about right for him.

Twitter etc., will be filled with Saints fans celebrating this and proclaiming him one of our worst players, but he as mentioned above he was played constantly in positions that just highlighted his weaknesses. Hes not a great attacking player and can be caught dreaming in defence, so RWB was a nightmare as he'd do nothing on the ball then leave space behind him due to high positioning. RB in a back 4 should negate most of that.

His confidence is done though, hes made a goal costing error virtually every league game hes played this season and that follows a poor season last year too. He might need games to build that up again.

I heavily suspect, as rumoured, we were in for Ashcroft weeks ago and either we've gotten fed up waiting or (more likely) we've been told outright that he's no longer available for loan.

Brown feels like a warm body and not too much else, on available evidence. He doesn't directly address a weakness in as much as he'd be coming in for Millen who is by no means a bad player for us, but the option to use Brown on the right of a three is interesting (we still don't have a left sided wing back to really make that work, but it would at least put Millen in a better position).

Right back was the one position on the park where we didn't have an immediate replacement (if you'll allow Callum Hannah as second choice left back) so in that sense it does improve the squad, but it does also have a "f**k it" vibe, in the sense of bringing someone else in now is better than holding on for another fortnight and potentially ending up with nobody.

It's got real Kevin Mcbride vibes.

Interesting signing considering our current right back is decent enough. Make me think that Millen will be pushed further up the pitch as his crossing is probably the best at the club.

Ross Millen on the wing. I want you to go away, say that out loud and then come back to sanity.

Hopefully he doesn't cost you as many goals as he's cost us this season. Other Saints fans being VERY generous in their appraisal of this absolutely nothing player.

Displays minimal effort as well. Looks like he couldn't care less about football.

Aye, this season he's been a ticking time bomb whenever he was on the pitch. Has looked a squad player since he's been with us but has started far too many in a position which just showed his flaws too much.

Sounds like Liam Dick but the right back version

Transfermarket has him listed as RB or RM

RM is because hes played RWB and their positions are recorded weird.

Hes played RWB, RCB in a 3, and Callum Davidson had a bizarre fascination with playing him at LWB for ages too, after a desperate sub ended with him creating a goal.

Where's the pie chart for him?
