So that's Wragg resigned the whip. Does this still result in a referral to the Standards Committee, or is that only when the whip is withdrawn due to inappropriate behaviour?

I'd assume as he is still a sitting MP it would still need to be investigated. He was standing down at GE anyway, so I'd imagine at this late stage, they'll softly let him see out the next few months, rather than do anything that might cause a by-election. Even if he left tomorrow, you are talking June at earliest for a by election and then parliament would shut down a few weeks later for Summer. If no GE called by then, you'd probably get a month or two at best post summer before it is called. Financially pointless to run the cost of a by election for say 60-80 days of parliament sitting max.

Wragg is more stupid that anything else, but just another indication of the low quality in parliament at the moment. Any punter would see the red flags and if you are a sitting MP, you should be even more alert.

Standards Committee might lead to a few more revelations with regard to exactly who else was involved, which I think is the prevalent factor in why Wragg wasn't thrown to the wolves by his own party, rather than fear of a by-election.

There's more to this than has already been admitted, it just feels that way.

If he's admitted what he has admitted, but also said "they had stuff on me", and has resigned the whip, it stinks of a ploy to avoid further scrutiny (which I'm sure the press are still doing).

Michelle Donelan's libel costs were £34k, more than double the amount the government claimed but Angela Raynor something something something.

Michelle Donelan used £34,000 of taxpayer funds to cover libel costs https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2024/apr/11/michelle-donelan-used-34000-of-taxpayer-funds-to-cover-libel-costs?CMP=share_btn_url

Graham Stuart resigned from Government today for no apparent reason whatsoever.

Tories on the radio this morning saying that they think that "education and tax" are a way to deter young people from smoking - as opposed to Sunaks* idea of making it illegal to sell fags to people under a certain age.

I wonder if any of those who walk into the other lobby are in the pockets of Big Tobacco?

I don't see the "tobacco lobby" giving up without a fight.  I hope that the press pay very close attention to the public statements and voting records of politicians as this develops and compares them with donations to political parties and individuals.

So what was Mark Menzies actually doing? A very weird description of events, essentially insinuating he was kidnapped.

Coke or hookers that he hadn't paid for IMO.

Are male prostitutes known as "hookers"   https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2592478/Tory-MP-Mark-Menzies-quits-drug-rent-boy-claims.html   sorry for using  the Mail but I reckon it gives an insight as to why he had to come up with 5 grand sharpish.

When I was a kid, we used to get a barber coming to our house. He'd bring his stuff, cut our hair and leave. He was married with kids.

My dad arrested him one day in public toilets in Stirling for hiring rent boys. When he told my mum, and I overheard him, this was the first time I'd ever heard the phrase.

After that we went to barber shops again.

Last night, a Tory source said the MP would be ‘getting help with personal issues’ in the wake of the claims.

You get caught hiring prostitutes and doing cocaine

I have "personal issues"

A valuable lesson on irregular verbs from ""Yes, Prime Minister" comes to mind....

"James Hacker : I occasionally have confidential press briefings, but I have never leaked.

Bernard Woolley : Oh, that's another of those irregular verbs, isn't it? I give confidential press briefings; you leak; he's been charged under Section 2a of the Official Secrets Act."
